Cyberattacks Trends for 2023

Planning for the optimization of security strategies is paramount to be done year after year. Cybersecurity is an ongoing development practice, and attackers continually compete when it comes to innovation.

Therefore, new ways to combat threats are emerging at all times and being aware of emerging market trends is fundamental to keeping company data always protected against cyber threats, since regardless of the size or segment that the organization may have, none is safe from attacks by intruders. Information security exists to be a priority in any company, otherwise the consequences will be dire.

Cyberattacks gradually intensify with the use of improved technologies, so it is necessary to implement modern and effective solutions to ensure security.

For 2023, some of the following trends should be highlighted:

  1. Ransomware In recent years, there has been an increasing trend towards more sophisticated and targeted ransomware attacks. Rather than using mass spam campaigns to distribute malware, attackers are increasingly using social engineering techniques, phishing and exploiting specific vulnerabilities in software or hardware used by their targets. Furthermore, ransomware attacks now often incorporate "double extortion" tactics, where attackers steal sensitive data from a victim's system before encrypting their files, threatening to publish the stolen data if a ransom payment is not made. Another trend is that ransomware attacks are becoming increasingly complex, with criminals using more advanced encryption techniques and obfuscation methods to avoid detection by security solutions. Furthermore, ransomware attacks are becoming more and more frequent in critical sectors such as healthcare and education. These industries often have less sophisticated security systems than other industries and can be more susceptible to ransomware attacks.

  2. Cyber Warfare Sponsored by Governments Cyberattacks carried out by governments are a growing and its a worrying trend. Governments have the potential to carry out cyberattacks on other countries or organizations to obtain information or influence political, military and economic events. Cyberattacks by governments are usually carried out through state-sponsored hacking groups, which are trained and funded by governments to carry out hacking operations on behalf of the state. These groups have access to significant resources such as cutting-edge technology and advanced network infrastructure, which makes them very effective in their attacks. Recently, we have as an example the cyber war that also takes place between Russia and Ukraine. These attacks include disrupting critical services, industrial espionage, stealing confidential information and sabotaging critical infrastructure such as the power grid, financial system and public transport.

  3. Cloud Services Cloud vulnerability continues as one of the largest trends in the sector involving cyber security. Cloud services provide numerous benefits such as cost savings, scalability and efficiency, but are also the main target of cybercriminals. Predictive security is useful in identifying the threats before the action of these criminals, and may realize which one is the safety of other endpoints.

  4. Blockchain as a Service (BaaS) It is considered an innovation in the area and has become an important ally in ensuring greater protection for companies. BaaS provides a decentralized database that brings reliability so that no group or individual has access to information beyond the authorized screening of those who may have accessed certain information. Thus, it is possible for data violations to be avoided. For the realization of this process, a robust provider must be used, as some BaaS solutions are safer and more complete than others. An IT service provider company must be included in the process for the system to be implemented correctly.

  5. Smart Cars Smart cars, or connected vehicles, are becoming increasingly common and offer many benefits such as greater efficiency and safety. However, these vehicles also have cyber safety risks as they are connected to the internet and have many integrated electronic systems. Intelligent cars attacks can be performed in many ways. For example, attackers may invade the vehicle system through a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection, or may use social engineering techniques to gain access to the vehicle. Once within the vehicle system, they can take control, access the owner's personal data, disable the safety system or steal car information. A recent example of intelligent car attack occurred in 2021, when a safety problem was discovered in the mobile application of a connected car that allowed hackers to steal car information and control functions such as turning the engine and opening or closing the doors .

  6. Artificial Intelligence Companies increasingly enjoy artificial intelligence to improve safety infrastructure. Essential in the construction of automated safety systems, natural language processing, face discovery and automatic threat detection. It enables the vast amounts of risk to be analyzed at a faster pace that benefits both large companies that deal with extensive amount of data and small and medium-sized companies whose security teams may have few resources.

  7. Machine Learning (ML) Machine Learning allows for more simplicity for cyber security, efficiency, and less expensive. Faced with a rich data set, ML develops patterns that are manipulated with algorithms. Thus, it is possible to anticipate and respond active attacks in real time. This technology will depend on these types of data so that effective algorithms are produced. They must come everywhere and represent as many scenarios as possible. ML implementation enables cyber security systems to analyze threat patterns and learn the behaviors of attackers. This prevents similar attacks from occurring in the future, as well as reducing the time required for experts in the area to perform routine tasks.

  8. IoT and 5G The Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G network have great potential for innovation and progress, but also offer new opportunities for cyber attacks, as these technologies are becoming increasingly common in our daily lives. One of the main security concerns for IoT devices and 5G networks is the lack of safety measures suitable for these systems. Many IoT devices are made with few security measures and many users do not bother to regularly update the device firmware. This means that they are vulnerable to cyber attacks, such as Botnet attacks and denial attacks (DOS). With the advent of the 5G network, it is expected that there will be an increase in the amount and complexity of IoT devices that connect to the network. However, this can also increase the attack surface for cyber criminals, as many of these devices are projected without proper security measures.

The best way for any kind of problem or damage to companies is to prevent threats. The introduction of new technologies and solutions should not be seen as a spending, but as an investment in preserving your company's information security.
